Residents of the capital area can expect considerable cold this weekend, with frosts that can drop to 13 to 18 degrees.
Eiríkur Örn Jóhannesson, a meteorologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, says in an interview with mbl.is that despite considerable frost, clear weather and a northern wind can be expected, which will not be very strong.
He says that the low that is now passing over the south and west of the country comes from the Greenland glacier, but when that low starts to move away, it will bring with it more northerly directions from the Arctic Ocean and the cold in its wake.
Double-digit numbers for the New Year
When asked, Jóhannesson says that the cold is likely to persist until the new year and residents of the capital area can expect to enter the coming year with frosts in double digits.
“This has become quite a frost and not something we see weekly or monthly here in the city.”
