1. They did this because “likely out of fear of reprisal against their families in North Korea in the event that they’re captured.” That’s brutal .

2. Dictatorships are menacing.

3. They’ve definitely been indoctrinated that they’ll be brutally tortured if captured by Westerners.

4. that’s genuinely awful, being that brainwashed is a terrifying thought.

5. It’s tragic when this might be your best option given what they will eventually do to you and your family.

6. They’re told if they desert the battlefield or get captured (also assumed as intentional desertion) their families back home will pay the price (labor camps, torture, death)

7. Wow. First you’re born in North Korea. Then you’re sent to fight in a foreign land. Then you kill yourself.

8. My heart bleeds for all the thousands of North Korean parents who gave up their children, to these two madmen. Life is bad enough for them already.

12. It is my understanding the Koreans being sent are untrained and ill-equipped, and they know they are expendable.

    Whether self-inflicted death, or death by the enemy, or death by their leaders, they are going to die.

13. What’s the best case scenario here? That you somehow survive a brutal war and then…get sent back to North Korea?!

15. When they’re sent to the front without even a radio, it’s likely the families were always going to get a letter saying they’ve been KIA. Those poor guys were never meant to leave the front. They should know that even if they surrendered, the news to their families wouldn’t change. They’ve already been written off.

17. Hang on..first it was “thousands of NK troops killed”. Then it was “no confirmation on any NK troops actually having been killed”. Now it’s “NK troops killing themselves”?

18. I’d like to hope that the captured North Korean who they reported as having died from his injuries is just fine and they are saying that to protect his family from reprisals.

    How low are they getting that they either flatbed the gun in or take the tires back after to use on another one.

25. Likely told to do this, so they don’t see how the rest of world isn’t so shitty

26. Nk doesn’t want them to survive. A group of battle hardened veterans back in country after seeing the reality of life outside nk and how fucking shit your life has been in comparison. That is an existential crisis to a authoritarian dictatorship. 

27. Probably been told by Kim jong un that if they’re captured their family will be tortured. Putin gleefully rubbing his hands together, cannon fodder and no one to pass the cheque too.

28. They aren’t ever going back to NK anyway. There’s no way the Kim’s will let thousands of fighting men who have been exposed to smart phones and the outside world back into their country. Chances for disruption or rebellion are far too high.

29. There’s zero doubt that these NK troops were told if they surrender or are captured that their remaining family in NK will be executed.

30. None of those guys are going back to NK alive. No way Kim is going to allow them to come back home after seeing what life in the west is like (even shitty Russia). Not to mention the risk of ideological contamination.
