The dad of missing Belfast man John George — also known as John Hardy — says he will not give up searching for his son until he finds his body.
Accepting that his son is dead, Billy George is in Spain with dozens of friends and family members searching for the missing father-of-two, who has not been seen since December 14.
“It might take days, weeks or even years, but I will find John’s body and those responsible for his death need to know that,” said Mr George.
Police in Spain are now treating the disappearance as a crime rather than a missing person investigation.
The luxury apartment where the missing man is thought to have spent his last hours has been closed off as a crime scene by Spanish police.
Forensic officers from the Cuerpo de la Guardia Civil in the Alicante region of Spain, arrived at the apartment on Saturday, shortly after 3pm Spanish time.
Two men from Northern Ireland were inside at the time and have been held by police but are not placed under arrest.
Neighbours in the affluent area, popular with Dutch and Norwegian expats, said the apartment had been rented by people from Northern Ireland around three months ago.
Earlier in the day, friends of John George had knocked the door of the property after receiving information that it may have been one of the last locations he visited prior to his disappearance. Shortly after they knocked the door, police arrived at the scene.
Several neighbours later showed up at police lines with information on suspicious activity around the property in the past few weeks. One offered CCTV footage to the officers.
An area of scrubland close by has also been identified as a potential crime scene.
The palatial apartment with a private pool sits in the exclusive Orihuela area in the Alicante region of the Costa Blanca.
A jet-ski was parked in the driveway and a Harley-Davidson bike in the street outside.
Billy George said he has spent the past few days ruling out online theories around his son’s death.
“There are accounts of Russian mafia, Moroccan mob bosses, the Kinahan gang and Albanian gangsters having being involved in my son’s disappearance. We don’t believe any of that is true and have ruled it out as deliberate false information.
“The truth, I believe, is much closer to home. We just need to bring our son home — that’s the priority right now. This is causing my family so much pain.
“I’ve accepted John is dead — I don’t feel him with me any more — but I am not leaving him here, alone. We need John’s body to bring him home and give him a proper burial.”
