Hafdís Guðrún Hilmarsdóttir, a running enthusiast, made her 300th trip up Esja yesterday. In an interview with mbl.is, she says there was no particular goal to achieve this number of trips this year.

“I achieved 200 trips in October and then the trips continued to pile up so I saw that I had a good chance of reaching 300. So I decided to take the plunge.”

She says that she has made a habit of making her trips up the mountain early in the morning before she gets to work. When asked, Hilmarsdóttir says that most of her trips have been up to the Stone and that she usually makes two trips up at a time. The most she made was eleven trips up to to the Stone in the same trip this summer.

Aiming for 500 trips

Hilmarsdóttir competes in mountain running and says that a trip up Esja is good practice for competitive runs.

Asked if she plans to make more trips up Esja next year, she says she would like to try for 400 or 500 trips in two years or in 2026.

“This is just the best training area we have, it just has everything,” she concludes.
