**The Italian Senate approved with 154 votes in favor, 131 against and two abstentions the requests of the Lega and FdI not to pass the examination of the articles of the Zan bill, de facto strucking the law down. The legislative process in the Senate of the bill, which had already been approved by the House, is therefore blocked**
The president of the Senate Elisabetta Casellati in the morning had declared admissible the requests for a secret vote presented by Lega and Brothers of Italy (the two most powerful right-wing parties) on the Zan bill, which aimed to fight against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. Casellati had accepted the request not to pass to the examination of the articles of the Zan bill, based on the Regulations and on the basis of the previous ones. She explains. “There are two proposals not to switch to the articles signed by right-wing senators Calderoli and La Russa: the President considered admissible these two requests and they were voted by secret ballot on the basis of the regulations and the previous ones” explains the President. “Do not use a procedural trick to escape confrontation”, said Gabriele Piazzoni, general secretary of Italian LGBT association Arcigay.
Bellanova: “The secret ballot is unacceptable, take responsibility” “We shouldn’t play with the with the rights of the people. Everyone should take the responsibility of letting people know which side they are on”. Teresa Bellanova (president of centrist party Italia Viva) writes on Facebook.
Grassadonia: “They are committing a profound injustice” “The request for a vote on the Zan Bill put forward by the center-right is yet another demonstration of the profound shame that certain politicians feel in the knowledge that they are committing a profound injustice”. This was stated by left-wing party Sinistra Italiana with the national head of Freedom & Rights, Marilena Grassadonia. “Parliament – concludes Grassadonia – must take responsibility for guaranteeing equal dignity and rights for all, especially for those who still suffer discrimination and violence today”.
Ronzulli: “Someone will have to take responsibility for today’s vote” “You preferred to bring to the Senate a text that divides the Parliament, the country, the majority itself, in a period where unity is needed to face real emergencies. Someone will have to take responsability for the outcome of today’s vote “says Licia Ronzulli, vice-president of the center-right Forza Italia group in the Senate and head of the blue movement for relations with allies.
Balboni: “The point is that with this law they wanted to pursue a different purpose and that is to insert a crime of opinion in our system: this law in fact transforms a legitimate opinion into a crime” claimed right-wing Senator Alberto Balboni, vice-president of the Justice Commission during the general discussion on the Zan bill.
Finally some good news
Get woke go broke
Nice
Such a sad end to this law.
“People want to be treated equally? How about no?”
And as usual it’s a shame to be from Italy.
Bunch of morons, all the hopes of progress after the new paternity leave and the discussion about the minimum wage are already over when I hear shit like this
Successo!
So before we get all offended, can someone post here a translation of the actual bill? “Anti-homophobia” means nothing, when trying to understand a piece of legislation.
Damn. This would get a few thousand upvotes if you changed “Italy’s” to “Poland’s”.
