It is and was possible to get rid of Russian gas or more importantly threats if the proper measures were taken. Moreover, it seems not to be very difficult. Below is example of Poland.

1. There is one LNG terminal operating since 6 years that can cover up to 30-40% of national gas needs. Gas is imported from USA and Qatar mostly. Actually, the terminal is in Swionoujscie, neighborhood of Germany. Terminal cost itself was less than 1 bn Euro and since 2 years it is being developed to extend capacity further.

2. A gas pipe “Baltic-pipe” will be finished in few months, it will allow to import gas from Norway, possibly even transfer it further to other countries in Europe.

Next winter Poland can cut off Russian gas entirely. I wonder why Germans and others did not take at least minimum measures before to have an alternative and secure itself from threats, it would also allow to have better position in negotiations with Gasprom.
