Consultations continue on Greece-Cyprus power link

Delegations representing the Greek and Cypriot governments met in Athens on Friday for talks, within the framework of an understanding between Athens and Nicosia regarding the electrical interconnection project between the two countries, known as the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI).

Hosting the meeting was Greek Environment and Energy Minister Thodoros Skylakakis.

Cypriot Energy Minister Giorgos Papanastasiou said the meeting addressed the observations of his government’s advisers on the possibility of the Republic of Cyprus being a shareholder in the GSI, adding that “some observations are critical and bring the entire consultation to halt, while others are more moderate.”
Nicosia is now expecting Athens’ response to the Cypriot Energy Ministry’s letter on the matter.

Nicosia has pledged to reach a decision by the end of 2024 on whether it will participate in the project for the electrical interconnection of Greece and Cyprus based on the study and observations of its own advisors.

The project obtained new momentum thanks to the entry of French fund Meridiam this month in the GSI, which is led by Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE).
