  3. The wars waged by this so-called empire were never the wars of its rulers. They were actually the wars of the secret police apparatus, a product of the humiliated and resentful masses who have a twisted, almost religious devotion to violence against themselves and others. In this society, every oppressed individual dreams of becoming a secret police agent, so they can inflict the same pain on others that they themselves have suffered.
