So I moved here from India a few months ago to study, and this is my first time living or even travelling abroad. So please bear with me if I perhaps lack enough perspective.

I am boggled by the variety of quality baked goods available in the UK. Mince pies, fruit pies, lemon tarts, puddings, brownies, cheesecakes, blondies, cakes, cookies, crumbles, scones… it goes on and on. A honourable mention to clotted cream, sinfully delicious in its own right. We have great desserts in my part of India (like these for example) but they are almost never prepared by baking.

How do they all taste this good! You get good quality cakes even in supermarkets like M&S or Waitrose for a reasonable price. My theory is that it is the high quality of dairy here compared to back home. This is not helping my sugar intake, send help!

  1. The sugar certainly does help 😀 but baked goods have definitely been improving for most of my life. No idea what’s driving it, though food in the country has generally been getting better in the last 20 years.
One thing to look out for in supermarket freezer isles is packs of oven baked croissants and pain au chocolates. They cook in about 20 mins and come out really well. It’s not the same as proper hand made ones, but they’re still a good buy

  2. Yes, it’s true, the UK has good food. Don’t tell everyone!

  3. Welcome to Britain! Some of these are ridiculously cheap + easy to make at home so go crazy. Also, make sure you try some spotted dick 🤭

  4. We are fatties, we like our baked goods.. everything seems better after something wrapped in pastry.

  5. We are known for our beige platters all over the world. Not always for good reason, but we are known
