Council of Europe raises concerns about unelected Dutch mayors

  1. Yes, from a purely democratic standpoint it makes total sense to elect mayors but out of all the political problems my country has, this is not one of them in my opinion.

Heaven forbid fvd voters managing to eek out a 16% vote to elect some moron as a mayor in my municipality just because our political landscape is so fragmented. At least right now we always get some kind of middle ground mayor appointment in the form of center right or left.

  2. Just a question for those knowledgeable. If mayors are chosen by the city/town council, is that appointment until they retire or is it connected to the term of the council? If the latter that would be an indirect vote like most governments are chosen or many other mayors in other countries.

  3. Isn’t the city council (directly elected) appointing the mayor (indirect election) conceptually equivalent to the parliament appointing the prime minister and government?

Can’t say I really see the problem here.

  4. We had a party (D66) that was all about this for some time. Then the main guy from that party who pushed elected mayors took an unelected mayor position and they quietly shelved the plan.

  5. Why is council of Europe targeting the Dutch ? We have the same thing here in Finland! The city council members who are elected by the people choose the mayor.
