Around 100,000 people celebrated the turn of the year in the British capital to the chimes of Big Ben and with a spectacular fireworks display on the London Eye Ferris wheel.

The Ferris wheel was inaugurated exactly 25 years ago at the turn of the millennium by then Prime Minister Tony Blair. However, due to technical problems, it took another three months before the tourist attraction could be put into operation. It is now one of the city’s landmarks and an integral part of the New Year’s Eve fireworks display.

There was less celebration in Edinburgh: the traditional Hogmanay festival in the Scottish capital saw all outdoor events and the fireworks display at Edinburgh Castle canceled due to stormy weather.

Fireworks and celebrations were also called off in other parts of the UK as a precaution due to warnings of storms, rain and snow. In Manchester, thousands braved the pouring rain to watch the fireworks in the city center.
