‘How can there be Jews in Europe if you keep bringing in laws against us?,’ asks Jewish leader after Greece rules to ban slaughter without stunning

  1. The EU court has [upheld and permitted](https://www.eureporter.co/world/israel/2021/10/04/world-jewish-congress-deplores-eu-court-decision-permitting-ban-of-religious-ritual-slaughter/) the ban.

    > World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder issued the following statement in reaction to the appellate decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union allowing Belgium – and by extension other EU member states – to ban religious ritual slaughter without pre-stunning.

    > “Today’s ruling is a continued maneuver to discriminate against Belgium’s Jewish and Muslim citizens. By Prohibiting religious slaughter without stunning, Belgium’s Constitutional Court has placed a potentially terminal obstacle to continued Jewish communal life in Europe. This is not a matter of animal welfare, but the suppression of religious freedom and liberty that is guaranteed in Article 10(1) of the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights.

    > “As antisemitism continues to surge in Europe and around the world, we cannot let instances of religious persecution like this go unchallenged. The European Union must reverse this ill-advised decision so that Jews, and other minority religions, can practice their beliefs without restrictions.”

  2. Reckon the animals in question would rather not be killed at all, never mind the method. Whether they’re stunned first or not is a piffling issue.

Animal slaughter does happen in Romania aswell. We call it “Taierea Porcului” (Pig Slaughter), it usually occurs in the backyard before Christmas. A similar thing happens with lambs before Easter. It is pretty backwards if you ask me, but I think his remark that this is an anti-jews law is taking it to an extreme. It’s not like individual households will lose the ability to grow animals and procure their own food for religious purposes, you just need to stun the animal before, it’s just common sense.

  4. They can always go through the New Zealand route: Stunning that does not kill the animal (reversible stunning), but renders it senseless while in effect.

Squares the circle pretty nicely. The food is halal/kosher while not increasing animal suffering.
