LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — The state’s lone operational nuclear power plant just concluded 50 years of commercial operation in December.
Operations began for the plant’s Unit 1 pressurized water reactors on December 19, 1974, and Unit 2 opened on March 26, 1980.
Ever since both units have been producing, more than 730,000 Entergy Arkansas customers have benefitted from its output.
“Marking the 50th anniversary of ANO is a celebration of its enduring contribution to our state’s progress,” said Entergy Arkansas President and CEO Laura Landreaux.
“As we look to the future, its role will be even more critical in powering innovation, attracting investments in our state, and ensuring a sustainable energy future. Together, we’re not just meeting today’s energy needs, we’re building the foundation for tomorrow’s opportunities.”
Stationed in Russellville, ANO has been vital for Arkansans with Entergy Arkansas being just as invested in the power plant now more than ever.
“Celebrating our 50th anniversary is a proud moment for everyone here at ANO and our local community,” said Dough Pehrson, site vice president.
“Even though we are recognizing this milestone, each year Entergy invests heavily into our facility to ensure we continue powering people’s lives with clean electricity.”
According to a release, ANO can provide ample energy for almost one million households.
More needs of customers can be met with, as ANO touts more than 1,800 megawatts of capacity.
ANO’s role in ensuring Arkansas is on the receiving end of clean power is huge, as it prevents the release of greenhouse gases and air pollutants linked with fossil fuel generation.
It is also responsible for improving air quality and providing 76% of clean energy that’s produced in The Natural State.
