LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — It’s finally beginning to feel like winter, so it’s time to break open those portable space heaters.

However, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has published tips and recommendations for safe usage this winter.

For starters, there are four main types of electric space heaters:

Oil or water-filled radiatorFan-forced heaterCeramic heaterInfrared heater

Here are some tips on how to sufficiently station your space heater:

First, ensure you have purchased a heater with the seal of a qualified testing laboratory.Then, ensure the heater is at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including yourself and others. Make sure the heater has a thermostat and overheat protection.Place the heater on a solid, flat surface.Make sure your heater has an auto shut-off in the event it tips overKeep your heaters out of the way of foot traffic and never block an exit. Keep children away from the space heater attended or unattended.Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet instead of an extension cord. Never use an extension cord.Space heaters should be turned off and unplugged when you leave the room or go to bed.

Reminder: Two in five deaths in space heater fires involve portable electric space heaters.
