MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) – A space heater was believed to have started a fire in a Murfreesboro home, according to the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department.
Crews responded to Alexander Boulevard for a residential fire call on Thursday. When firefighters entered the home, they found a fire in the master bedroom, but it was able to be quickly extinguished.
Two people were home at the time of the fire, but they were evacuated and assessed by EMS. No injuries were reported in the incident, MFRD said.
MFRD said a preliminary investigation into the incident shows that the fire was possibly started by a space heater that was plugged into a surge protector and sparked, igniting the curtains.
With winter weather in the near forecast, MFRD is warning people about the dangers of home heating devices like space heaters, furnaces and fireplaces.
“Portable heaters can cause fires if placed too close to combustible materials, such as drapes, furniture, or bedding, so make sure to place them at least three feet away from these materials,” MFRD said. “Always plug electric space heaters directly into a wall outlet and never into an extension cord or power strip, to prevent overloading and causing a fire. Never leave portable heaters on while sleeping.”
