  1. Scandinavian and Germanic people were also in the Roman army

  2. It was an occupation by a foreign oppressor its makes sense that the soldiers would come from elsewhere.

  3. They’ll go mental when they find out people have been moving around northern europe since the ice retreated 15,000 years ago…

  4. The Romans and Vikings owned slaves. The Roman Army auxiliaries were non-Roman citizens from all over the world. I’m not sure this is going to surprise anyone too much.

  5. Doesn’t really compare at all with the massive demographic change since 1991 though does it

  6. How does that rewrite history? Is it actually surprising that there would have been people going to Britain from Scandinavia prior to the main waves of Anglo-Saxons? It’s not as if it was an isolated region with a navy acting to blockade itself lol

  7. People moved around a lot, no fucking shit. This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who was paying attention in school.

  8. Honestly, it sounds a bit like a non story. Romans used foreign auxiliaries through most of their history, with Germanic tribes probably being their biggest suppliers. Plus, most trade routes go back to prehistory, including those between Scandinavia and Britain. So, them finding Scandinavians in England that predate the arrival of Angols, Saxons and Jutes in England doesn’t sound ground breaking at all, it sounds like it aligns with our understanding of British history.

  9. But Britain’s always been a melting pot of sorts. Sure, it was over a long period of time, but it’s not like people haven’t had boats for thousands of years. Even outside of mass migration or invasion, there would be people settling here.
