UK government prioritising savings in review of post-18 education

  1. Well, no surprise there. The government does not want to fund the “lefty” academics and lecturers.

However, what is the alternative? The polytechnics are long gone, apprenticeships are even more expensive than university places, and training on the job has been found to be ineffective (if done at all) time and time again.

If they just want to spend less money, that will affect outcomes and social mobility.

  2. “Savings” like they promised with Austerity it measures? Where more cash just disappears into their mates pockets?

  3. If you were designing a system to do everything badly the current one would be it. It doesn’t help the poor, but does spend enormous amounts of cash. It encourages falling standards and a race to the bottom. It leaves graduates with huge debts that follow them through their lives. It encourages skilled people to emigrate. It doesn’t increase the number of people available to work in high paid or socially useful professions. It’s one of the biggest failures in government.
