We got this warning. We are going to the airport today morning (3:00 am when the hazard is at its peak) and we will drive around 20 minutes, there is no train options.
Is this rally super dangerous? We are not super experienced drivers and we do not have a 4×4.
Thank a lot!

  1. Well, yes. There are freezing rains overnight, so drive safe and account for more time. 4×4 means nothing when traction is at 0.

  2. Yes, there will most likely be freezing rain.
But there is always a bit uncertainity how severe it will be.

  3. I think if you are equipped with a good car and tires, driving safely, and give yourself enough time, you should be fine. Level 3 is quite high and I feel meteo Swiss only pulls levels 3 and 4 out rarely. The snow storm we had in the Zurich area a few weeks back was a level 3, and the roads were a complete shit show.

If in doubt, get a taxi.

  4. What kind of response do you expect? Be careful and plan more time.

  5. Yes, it can be dangerous. Drive carefully, especially over bridges, avoid steep roads if possible and take your time.

  6. I just almost bit it hard while walking the dog – there’s a lot of black ice, be safe

  7. A couple general tips for driving in icy conditions:

Take ot slow. Goes for the tempo aswell as your steering and pedal inputs. Any harsh/quick inputs will make the car less stable.

Braking dinstance is twice as long if not longer in these conditions. Also pressibg the pedal completely doesn’t do much, the tires can only support so much braking pressure

Don’t turn the wheel more than you really have to. More steering lock will cause the front tires to slip more easily, causing your caar to understeer.

If you struggle with turning instead you can really gently touch the brake pedal during turning, not to slow down the car but just enough to transfer more weight onto the front tires.

  8. Yes, take it seriously. For people who don’t understand: The ground is expected to be colder than the air because it was below zero all day and night for a few days now. the weather will warmen over night, so if it rains, the rain might freeze instantly on the ground, creating essentially black ice on the road. Depending on the conditions the type of tires don’t matter anymore, it will simply be dangerous. So please if you can avoid it, don’t drive, and certainly avoid small roads on the countryside.

  9. You will not be driving 20 minutes. You’ll be driving 30-60 minutes, if you don’t encounter an accident en route.

It’s gonna rain in a bit, and the rain is going to freeze immediately.

  10. Ah, sorry, I didn’t read your message. If you drive to the airport from a city like Zurich you should most likely be fine. the most driven roads tend to stay warm enough and might have some salt on them still, just drive slowly and carefully. if you happen onto a patch of ice do NOT try to steer against it or brake suddenly, just immetialy go off the gas and try to ride it out until your tires grip again.

  11. In Zurich it’s snowing right now, but this is supposed to turn to rain soon. Drive slow and smart. Snow is fine, ice is a bitch.

  12. I live in the airport area and luckily it turned out to be snow not icing rain. Plows are at work but snowfall is continuing and even if better ice, still no good driving.

If you have some snow driving experience and feel comfortable driving on snow, go slow, plan lots of time, take turns slowly.

Taxi drivers are not necessarily better equipped (those Priuses are not 4WD) unless you can ask for one specifically and the drivers I have had around here, not all of them I would trust on these road conditions.

If you are on the careful side, take the last train to the airport and hang out at one of the hotels until your 3am. That’s actually what I would do.

  13. It’s dangerous, yes. I was on the road 2 hours ago in Bern, it rained and it was -2 degrees Celsius. The rain instantly froze on the streets, and salt is useless in this conditions. It was really slippery. Take your time (for a drive of 20 minutes take at least one hour into account), and if you have chains for your tires, use them!
