I have been wondering this for a while seeing that in some of the more scenic parts of Lapland observation towers seem to be popular and common. Is it legal for observation towers to be privately built on private property? I know there are building restrictions on houses in terms of area in m2 but how about for a structure which is not lived in/ not closed in at all. When I refer to observation tower I mean something along the lines of what is featured in the images.

  1. Structures like this will definitely require a building permit, if they are allowed in the area in the first place. You’ll need to consult the building ordinance for the area you’re interested in. Google the name of city/municipality and “rakennusjärjestys”.

  2. I guess a small one will be possible, but not the one in the second picture

  3. You need a building permit for any kind of structure that cannot be easily moved or disassembled. And even if you argue that’d be the case here, it only takes one neighbour to report it to land you in red tape hell.

So don’t do this kinda stuff without proper research – asking about it on Reddit doesn’t count.

  4. It will be easier to observe if they cut down the surrounding trees. You got to love those finns:facepalm:

  5. If it’s a really wild area, you can build it without permission, but you have to report it and pay the fee, around hundred euro, maybe just for registration but this construction exist. But maybe even not because it’s very open construction, which doesn’t have a four walls and closing doors. Of course, in the city areas it’s a bit different, they normally have a bit stricter rules. But in both cases, I think you will need to register it. It’s not a permission but registration they put it on a map and it’s also information for the emergency and fire department.

  6. The word used in the Lookout offends my soul. It’s a soft word and that’s fine if treated appropriately but it’s low grade because it has so many knots.
