  1. I’m surprised Albania is #1

I’m not surprised that Serbia is last

  2. Which of these countries has the best chance of joining the EU in the next few years?

  3. Source: American Eagle Burger Institute

Edit: It’s a meme guys, I’m sorry you are so fragile.

  4. How is Albania that far up? Other Balkan countries must be in absolute chaos if we are in the first place in this index.

  5. nobody wants western democracy anymore especially after what happened to iraq and libya

  6. If they don’t follow our agenda, then they are not democratic. We hold the definition of democracy

  7. West: bombed Belgrade

Also west: Why are Serbians against the West?

  8. Where’s Slovenia and Croatia? I’m missing something.

  9. Ah, democracy in the Western Balkans, a masterclass in how to tread water without actually swimming.

  10. Does anyone know the reason Montenegro’s performance surged between 2019-2021?

  11. I was in bosnia last summer and a local said that is was due to corruption but also their political system

  12. For clarification,

OP used a source and plotted them in a chart and then specifically chose “representation” as the index to show us here.

There is nothing especially wrong with that but using a title such as “Democracy in western balkans” and then showing only “representation” is kind of misleading, and most of the comments seem to be interpreting this as a absolute “democracy score”.
It definitely is one of the biggest indices you want to use when evaluating how “democratic” a country is but things such as individual rights, due process, checks and balances etc. matter as well.

The sub-title mentioning that there are multiple “category level scores” and multiple “indeces”(plural) kind of show that the raw data used more indeces besides “representation”.

so, OP u/big_cat112, please source? 🙂

  13. Albania near the top since 2008? Im probably not gonna take this index seriously

  14. That’s what happens when liberal politicians, instead of working for the people who voted for them, work for people who elected them – who bought them. Dictators get power.

  15. Democracy is quiet, if you don’t hear constant news from a country about its state of politics, it means it’s stable. There is no need to comment things that function. This would be reflected here pretty well – I have no idea about the politic landscape in Albania and N. Macedonia, but I know what goes on in Bosnia and Serbia like I live there.

  16. I love how posts about the Balkans here immediately fill up with cosplaying nationalists talking shit about their neighbours from their cozy Berlin apartments.

  17. I believe it correlated participations at Eurovision. When they get autoritarian, they blame the show and retreat, like hungary and slovakia.

  18. Hungary should be on here and would be similar to Serbia unfortunately

  19. We’re the most democratic no other country has a second co-official language like Albanian and rights like the Albanians in Macedonia. They can complain about how much they want but nowhere except Kosovo and Albania they have more right than the majority.

  20. Can we lock this post? I don’t like the implications of it and would like it censored

    Many thanks

  21. Best and worst performers swapped places…

Feeling bad for Serbia, I visited for several months in 2006…

  22. I live in Serbia.

Yeah, it’s a corrupt incompetent shit hole.

But many people are nice and they may have a future. It’s a hard fight.

  23. Serbian people are protesting against a dictator… Someone please help…anyone? EU?
