Yes because Russia or any other aggressor as seen doesn’t give a shit about neutrality or security of non block countries. If you are alone you are up for grabs and no one will protect you.
There’s enough dead weight in NATO as is. They can join when they have a military worth even a fraction of a damn.
TLDR: There would have to be a referendum for it to happen, and the idea isn’t popular. Though if it happens, it seems aligning with the new EU Common Defense policies, is more popular than NATO.

No: free riding is free. They’re well aware they’ll be protected by the US and UK no matter what they do. Further, “we wouldn’t make a difference anyhow”.
All the rational point say no. Only solidarity, brotherhood, and nebulous “doing the right thing” say yes.

Ireland being neutral isn’t the same as Finland being neutral.
Ireland will lost their heavy softpower if they stop being neutral, there’s a reason why numerous European cities get bombed by terrorist but not Ireland. Because Ireland has historically not been an imperialistic country and been occupied for a LONG time of their history (you can still make a case to this day) that’s why how some of the MPs can criticise about the states in regards about Palestine. **Because they have been there themselves.**
A lot of benefits will go away if you open the pandora’s box of not being neutral and just can’t close it back. And Ireland isn’t a hated nation. No one hates Ireland.
The Irish people are free to decide if they wanna be in NATO but they need to think critically about joining it

Here’s some [recent opinion polling in Ireland](https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/politics/poll-sands-beginning-to-shift-on-irish-neutrality-41416077.html), on ending neutrality and the different ways that might be done.
