Ethiopia and Somalia vow to strengthen ties

  1. SS: For almost a year Ethiopia and Somalia were in a diplomatic row over Ethiopia’s deal with Somaliland for a port. Somaliland is a region that split off from Somalia 30 years ago and is an unrecognized country that Somalia still claims sovereignty over. The Ethiopia and Somalia deal was brokered by Turkey was for keeping Ethiopian troops in Somalia but details regarding Somaliland are not currently known.

  2. Why are they claiming that they haven’t conceded anything? It’s increasingly looking like Ethiopia got what they wanted and their troop presence (which is not part of the AU mission) will remain. Why are they there if they are not coordinating with the AU?
