Transnistria refuses to purchase gas from the West, awaits help from Russia

1. Per the article:

   Background:
   – Since 1 January, the unrecognised region of Transnistria has faced a halt in Russian gas supplies, leading to gas outages for tens of thousands of households and a shutdown of local industries.

   – The Transnistrian authorities urged residents to rely on electric heaters as an alternative, given that electricity remains available due to the Dniester Power Plant operating on reserves of fuel oil and coal.

   – These reserves are predicted to last until the end of winter, but with increased electricity demand to compensate for the gas shortage and falling temperatures, they may be depleted sooner.

   – On 3 January, Transnistria introduced rolling blackouts as part of measures to address the crisis.

   Seems like they totally have a handle on this and nothing could go wrong. Imagine bucking a reliable source of gas in favor of relying on the Russians.

2. An internal excuse for Russia to go ape it will try to sell as legitimate internationally.

11. I once watched a YouTube traveler video of this place and it honestly looked like the saddest place imaginable. The local “pub” featured looked like a random low grade council office. The locals looked like they’d been stuck in there since the 70s, too.

16. Why don’t we support in Moldova invading and regaining control over it? Seems simple enough, west could provide weaponry and Russia is still distracted

19. unlucky the promised “revolution” won’t come, there won’t be a russian military “special operation” in tranistria anytime soon, I guess we can add this to the long list of recent russian losses.

    Some battles have been fought and lost, but russia is losing the war very obviously.

21. This is going to be a marvelous advertisement to all seeking Russian aid as to how valuable it truly is…

22. Isn’t there another pipeline that goes via Turkey that can supply Transnistria and Russia is not shifting to supplying gas via that?

    I’m not a conspiratorial person (at all,) but it looks a lot like the people who are able to solve this for Transnistria are perfectly comfortable for their people to suffer where solutions are available.

24. This narrow-minded way of thinking reminds me of the Kursk submarine disaster. The Russians refused help from the west, who had the equipment and skill to save the crew. But instead of doing the right thing, Putin continued his holiday in Sochi and let 118 men die. They died simply because Putin didn’t want Russia to look weak to the world.
