Serbia says 2024 was its hottest year in history. The average surface air temperature last year was 13.3C, which is 2.3C higher than the average for the period 1991-2020 and almost 1.0C more that the previously hottest year, 2023.

  1. As was the case with a link I submitted about Australia a few days ago, Serbia is also comparing their 2024 temperature to the average for a much more recent time period, 1991-2020, instead of the pre-industrial average that climate science uses for the world as a whole.

In 1991, the world as a whole had already warmed by .7C, and in 2020, it was 1.3C. A roughly equivalent amount of warming is already baked into Serbia’s 1991-2020 average, so 2024’s 2.3C of warming would be much higher if compared to the pre-industrial average.
