I assume it shows up under UV but I don’t think they realise how easy it is to buy a cheap UV torch these days.
I’ve rarely seen the met within half a mile of most phone snatch videos.
Maybe use a truncheon if they can get that close
Bout time, this DNA spray is good stuff
At least they’re trying. It’s gotten ridiculous how many phone snatchers there are. How many people are stealing bikes, scooters, and mopeds without fear.
I might be wrong, but hard labor might be the way to go for these criminals. Public hard labor. So everyone sees them. So they are humiliated. Granted this could backfire and is definitely not positive…
You can get small spray canisters like this online quite legally. I believe Amazon sell them.
I have one stored in the tube bag of my bike as commuting through Finsbury Park in the dark evening I pass straight past a group of hooded, masked intimidating looking gang that are always hanging out just inside the gate, very well hidden under the broken street lamps to the right.
I’m a pretty confident person even in the dodgiest of London areas, but definitely have my guard right up as I pass. Almost certainly involved with phone theft at the least. Every now and again the police hang around there to scare them off.. but that’s about once a month, so not exactly effective.
Wish the council would at least fix those lights. Would make a lot of difference.
They would have to leave their desks for this though?
This isn’t really news. I remember a couple years ago they were using this same method to try to tackle moped riders
If you’re that close then just taser them.
I dont get it.
So the police see someone nicking phones, then they maybe spray them if they are in the right place and manage to hit. Then if they track them down before it gets washed off they can link to the crime?
If they are close enough to spray them why not arrest them there and then? Kick them off the bike or whatever. The range on this spray cant be that far
The Met has had DNA tagging spray for years. They were using it at the height of the moped enabled robberies on 2018/2019
They still need to catch them, not sure if this article realises it
Can they use undercover police using phones as bait and then spray them?
So they’re just hoping that some of these thefts will happen to occur while there’s a police officer standing right there?
I take it the police have to be in plain clothes for this to work.
Or just catch them?
Waste of money. Some guy stole my bike, rolled right through a cctv I have a clear colour profile shot of the guy at close range.
I sent the picture and despite software facial recognition the police decided to offer me counselling instead. Said they couldn’t find the guy.
Give them bricks to chuck at them or shotguns with bean bags. But first you need more police in the first place. I couldn’t even walk in to the police station. I had to stand out side while they told me to ring a bell line to receive a crime number.
Everything was done via email.
If they put UV lights at tube station entrances etc and monitored CCTV it could be quite effective.
It’s an attempt I guess but if you’re close enough to even tag them they you could have probably caught them using some other kind of force unless this is for those motorbike guys doing drive by thefts
Find 👏 My 👏. God it’s so pathetic that instead of using the in built tracking features on phones (that you can prevent from being turned off by the thieves btw) they have to revert to silly non solutions like tagging spray…
So… they’re giving cops… r@pe spray?
They’ve already been using this for a while. Nice to see its use is being expanded
For anyone wondering. You can buy Farb Spray. It’ll stay on someone’s sling for a few days and is a bastard to get off. So if you were attacked and you managed to spray them they’d have to make a get away with a bright red face. It’s legal to carry and use in the uk.
Aside from the obvious requirement for police proximity to the phone snatchers, is the requirement to spray actual skin of the perpetrator. Most of them wear hoodies and/or balaclavas, so what are they going to tag that can’t be taken off?
Cheers guys, feeling safer already
You can buy these yourself and they are legal they are made by the same brand as Mace
I have 2 of them myself granted I’ve not used them though

What about adding in a big stick so ram in the wheels of their twat e bikes and mopeds
Would be easier to just arrest them surely?
