A 31-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man from Guinea were jailed six months each after they were caught trying to leave the country using fake documents.

The pair were arrested at the Malta International Airport on 4 December, just days before the OSCE ministerial council meeting was held in Malta. At the time, Malta had reintroduced border checks as part of its security measures.

The accused were caught using passports issued from Gambia on behalf of third parties and fake Italian residency documents. They told the police that they were seeking to get to Belgium in search of a better life.

Taking into account that the woman was pregnant, the prosecution still insisted on effective jail term, adding that she could be given all the necessary medical attention while serving the jail term.

The two admitted to the charges brought against them and were condemned to six months imprisonment each.

Magistrate Ann Marie Thake presided over the court.

Inspector Karl Roberts prosecuted.
