News flash, Hungarian state TV has been the testing ground of Russian and right-wing talking points for a decade or more. I started noticing in 2012 or so that I’d hear Brexit or Trump-aligned talking points from my Hungarian family members a day or two before they’d hit The Sun or Fox News. Pretty sure that’s how Gyorg Soros become a boogeyman as well.
Hungary shouldn’t be in EU. This is going to hurt us way more than anything Putin does directly. I wish we could do something.

I’m reading a lot of comments about how Hungary doesn’t belong in the EU, how it’s the population’s fault, about societal problems, etc. I think there is some truth to those points, but let me flip this around for a bit.
I do not believe that a people, an entire country, could be inherently “evil”, or “unworthy” to be in the EU. It is true however, that there are very deep-rooted societal issues in Hungary that keep making it possible for Orbán to stay in power. However, just as Russians cannot necessarily be blamed for believing Putin’s propaganda, Hungarians shouldn’t be held in lower regard for believing Orbán’s media. NO ONE is immune to propaganda. No one.
We, Hungarians, do have a responsibility to get rid of Fidesz, and there are many of us that believe so. But the truth is, conditions are not ideal. We are apathetic. The election system is skewed towards Fidesz. I am not even looking for excuses, just describing how things are so that we all see clearly.
As for the “how did we get here”, there is an old adage about a frog in a pot being boiled to death: the temperature of the water around him is increasing ever so slowly, and he just doesn’t notice until it is too late. Well, it was something like that for us. It also seems like we collectively have no idea about how we could get out of this situation now. Yay.
In other news: turns out the sky is blue.
Of course Orban is going to keep sucking Putin’s dick. Traitor to his own people that he is, who would stand behind him in Europe?
Who knows, maybe this whole war could also get rid of asshats like him.
We had signs of this for years – the incessant Soros baiting, the extreme homophobia and anti-migrant attitude. Like it or not but values like this are the back-door for the Kremlin – European right wingers will sell their soul to the devil if it means repressing local minorities and being anti-liberal. When your biggest enemy is a liberal, free society, then no tools are too disgusting to use.

So, Putin just congratuated this new FIDESZ puppet and said he hopes that the close relationships between Russia and Hungary will stay strong…

The problem is with these folks such as antivaxers, qanon, putinpals is once you engage with them in a reasonable conversation to try to change their mind, they gain a platform and validation.
15 years ago ppl who spouted conspiracy theories were shamed and ridiculed, and if I recall correctly, this sort of thing was much less of a problem.
I say ostracise, ridicule, and shame. Kindness and listening just gives them validation.
