I’ve been working in Austria for a while at this point. I visit mcdonalds at least once a week and couldn’t help but notice that many young people put their feet on sofa with dirty shoes on??…the place where other people may sit as well??? Is this really “normal” here?

  1. No, it’s not normal. And I’m concerned that you’ve seen on more than one occasions. Was it always the same person or the same group?

  2. No, we teach our children that feet belong on the ground. For some reason young people tend to ignore that rule in fast food restaurants, puplic transport and parks. No idea why that is, it’s been like that for 20 years or so. I suspect that fastfood has such a bad reputation in our country thanks to countless campaigns against it that young people without shame see no difference between a Macdonalds and a subway station, but who really knows.

  3. Nah they didnt enjoy a healthy parental education.

“Scheiß huankinda” we call them here.

  4. same in public transport. I often see young people in (oebb) trains having their feet on the seats. I hate it but at the same time I don’t want to be the old guy telling them to take them down

  5. You have to say : “gib deine scheiß haxn owe sunst brich i’s da du elendige scheiss kreatur” which means “could you please put your feet down”

  6. McDonalds guests are usually one of the best educated and well behaving people. I thought this is common sense

  7. Thing is, any Oma or Opa will set them straight. It’s Austria. Feel free to launch into any stranger whose behavior doesn’t suit you.

  8. I also often don’t sit in a normal way (eg.like that dude in the picture) but i do take my shoes off before 😉

I think sitting weird is getting more and more common among the youth but i wouldn’t say it’s an Austrian thing.

    Edit: spelling

  9. I’ve never seen someone do this, and I’m sorry you had to see such disgusting act with your very own eyes.

  10. When I lived in Austria 30 years ago that was considered extremely rude, and people would not be shy about telling you to get your dirty stank feet off the seats. Little old ladies were among the most fearsome enforcers. If things have gotten this lax since I’ve been gone that makes me sad.
