Germany has launched an online platform for national visa applications, making its immigration process more modern.
The Consular Services Portal, introduced on January 1st, 2025, lets people from any country apply online for 28 types of national visas. These include visas for work, study, training, and family reunification.
Digital platform replaces outdated processes
Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called the platform a “real administrative revolution.”
The platform follows a two-year pilot program in three visa sections and now connects all 167 German visa offices worldwide.
Applicants can skip long forms and in-person visits by applying online.
This change addresses delays caused by paper-based procedures and mail. The digital portal speeds up the process, cuts wait times, and makes it easier for people to apply.
Addressing skilled labor shortages
Germany needs at least 400,000 skilled workers each year, impacting industries like healthcare and technology.
“We cannot afford to deter people from coming here to roll up their sleeves due to outdated application forms and waiting periods,” Baerbock stated.
The simplified visa process is part of a larger push to attract international workers and support the economy.
This effort ties into reforms under Germany’s Skilled Immigration Act. Measures like the Opportunity Card make it easier for migrants with basic German skills and job experience to work in Germany.
In 2024, Germany also raised the number of work visas for Indian nationals from 20,000 to 90,000, showing its focus on meeting labor demands.
