Irish dairy and beef farmers urged to grow crops amid Ukraine shortage fears | Food & drink industry

  1. Have a one hundred acre beef farm in Cavan. I haven’t got one field that is suitable for crops. People need to understand that.

  2. Farmers are like.. OH yea .. why didnt I think of making more profit before the government told me to.. good idea ! I just “grow more” . all those fields I never used

  3. This is fine, but the animals also have to be fed. A farmer growing grain instead silage now has a bunch of animals he can’t feed (Unless he buys feed which is then a zero sum game). He also likely won’t have an efficient setup, and trying to plant and harvest it will probably involve contractors who will be up the wall.

Not trying to downplay the concerns about food security but its not as simple as lashing in a few fields of wheat.
