They aren’t heroes, they’re deserters. And either going to get killed without making an impact or likely to make a bad situation worse.

The head of the UK armed forces, Adm Sir Tony Radakin, said on the news a couple of days ago that any current serving personnel are forbidden from going to Ukraine, and it is illegal for them to go to to help in the fight. In a nutshell they’re fucked.
