KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Flights resumed at KCI after a winter storm swept across the Kansas City metro.
Although it has passed, the storm continues to cause disruptions for travelers heading back from their holiday break.
On Monday, 100 flights were delayed and 91 more were canceled, and if that wasn’t enough of a headache, those who finally made it home were greeted with yet another delay when they got to their car.
“This is ridiculous,“ one woman said as she was scraping her windshield.
It wasn’t the warmest homecoming for travelers once they finally landed in Kansas City.
“You see how thick this is,” said a woman with an ice scraper in her hand, “got to dig and hopefully don’t break the window in the process.”
The woman KCTV5 spoke with said she just got home from Houston only to return to her car, covered in a thick layer of ice and surrounded by a wall of snow, something she was not expecting.
“Definitely not, and not the inconvenience of just getting in and out of the parking lot, and not only that I had to wait such a long time for the shuttle my hand is frozen,” she said.
After she cleared off her windshield, backing out of her parking spot was the next challenge, as nearly a foot of snow waited for her.
“I can’t get out!” she yelled.
But she wasn’t the only one, a few cars down, a family was chipping away at their car after going on quite the journey.
“Got to the airport, we had a direct flight home, canceled, we set up for another flight, canceled set up another flight, canceled,” said Lavonne Johnson, “We decided to rent a car, and it took us almost 13 hours to get home.”
While some were prepared for the snow, others were not, turning to other methods.
KCTV5 saw one man on his car trying to break the ice with the palm of his hand and lent him an ice scraper.
While it was a pain to clean off cars and get them out of their spots, travelers like Johnson are feeling blessed to be home.
“I love it, just being back here on the ground in Kansas City, I’m so happy to be here,” she said.
KCTV5 reached out to KCI to find out more about their snow removal process, but did not hear back.
