The European Union wants to impose even more sanctions on Russia. European Commission President Von der Leyen said at the two-day summit in Versailles he wants a fourth package of punitive measures, without giving further details. French President Macron said “all options are on the table” regarding new sanctions.
At the palace near Paris, the 27 leaders of EU member states met to discuss the war in Ukraine and its consequences.
Von der Leyen confirmed the EU’s intention to be independent of Russian gas, oil and coal by 2027. A proposal to achieve this will be presented in May. It is also being investigated whether something can be done about the sky-high energy prices in the short term. A special working group is considering a plan to replenish energy supplies for next winter.
Supply of weapons
Furthermore, the EU wants to provide another 500 million euros for the supply of weapons and equipment to the Ukrainian army, European Council President Michel said after consultations with heads of government. German Chancellor Scholz reported that a decision had been made to spend more on defense.
The meeting also made it clear that Ukraine should not count on joining the European Union any time soon. A statement did say, “Ukraine is part of our European family,” but no concrete commitments were made.
The European Commission was, however, instructed to process Ukraine’s application quickly. But even if it assesses the application positively, the start of admission negotiations could be a long time coming.
Ah, we’ll finally be free, now we need more federalisation.
Let the “empire” of Russia be a stain in the history books. Thank you Putin for bringing down this monstrosity.

i have a feeling it will happen a lot sooner
when it means that shit gets imported from other places than its kinda pointless – all oil sellers are gangsters
hope this independence means renewable sources
Too little too late.
They don’t have to give you the proposal and you don’t have to wait for it by may, here, I’ll write it out:
1. Bunch of subsidies for renewable energy that are woefully inadequate to even put a dent in the energy dependence and depend on some mystical private sector interest to see the light of day
2. Buearaucratic magic of swapping energy/emissions/numbers in an excel sheet that makes things look better to a paper-pusher
3. Obligatory “innovation” investments that imply you throw money science goes brrr and stuff gets better
4. Requirements for nations to pay things only Germany, some of northern europe and maybe France can pay (but probably won’t)
5. Blanket law on water/air/solar that doesn’t apply to most geographic features of the EU
6. Couple penalties against coal and oil thrown in for good measure
7. A begrudgingly given law to do some nuclear with no concrete promises, funds or requirements
Anyone with half a brain is aware becoming independent of Russian energy will take at least a decade for starters.
And looking at the EUs latest proposals and ideas for energy gives me the idea they’re reaching new levels of incompetence. I’m not even a eurosceptic lol. Or well, I guess I wasn’t, but I’m becoming one when I see hopeful stuff like this butchered when the time for the law comes…
5 years? Better go faster than that because I’m guessing that Russia will put a rush on building its additional China pipelines and completing its general business reorientation to high growth eastern markets.
End result: Russia still on the border; Europe fossil energy costs skyrocket.
This has to stop much sooner. Wiring enormous sums of money directly to the Kremlin every day while stopping all other trade and bank transfers could ironically even strengthen Putin’s regime. He gains almost total control because everyone is dependent on government money whereas independent businesses have to shut down or leave the country.
