Endurance: Shackleton’s lost ship is found in Antarctic

  1. >The Weddell Sea is pretty much permanently covered in thick sea-ice, the same sea-ice that ruptured the hull of Endurance. Getting near the presumed sinking location is hard enough, never mind being able to conduct a search. But herein also lies part of the success of the FMHT project. **This past month has seen the lowest extent of Antarctic sea-ice ever recorded during the satellite era**, which stretches back to the 1970s. The conditions were unexpectedly favourable.

Oh, good, that sounds like great news. 🙂

  2. wow. That’s in amazing condition.

Semi-related, but if you want to get a vague (and dramatised) idea of the conditions the crew potentially lived in whilst trapped in the ice, then i can recommend watching the TV show ‘Terror’ on iPlayer. Good show, albeit set in northern canada instead of antarctica.

  3. I watched Uncharted in the cinema last week and it made me think about when the next big lost ship discovery would be. Turns out it was the week after haha.

  4. Don’t journos learn fucking anything, you don’t report the location of a historical find because treasure hunters can just go strip her bare now and if it was a beachcomber with a metal detector the finds could end up in a museum but the ones who could afford to pillage her ain’t sharing and who knows what historical treasure is still on board.

Although i can see a National Treasure 3 Return to Endurance getting the go ahead.

  5. Somehow Boris will turn this into ‘an under this government, Mr speaker’ triumph.
Remarkable man Shackleton and an equally remarkable tale of survival too.
The pictures do paint an eerie sight don’t they.

  6. Can someone enlighten me?

I have Caroline Alexanders book The Endurance, on page 48 there’s a photograph taken by Frank Hurley, of Endurance stuck in the ice, I can’t see any sign of the ships name and the polar star on the stern, as shown in the video. Why is this?

  7. There’s a good adaptation of Shackleton’s story from 20 or so years back on All 4 at the moment with Kenneth Branagh if anyone’s interested.
