2. They’re rich. They can rebuild.

   But they are also losing irreplaceable items and that sucks. I mean things like family photos, heirlooms and whatnot.

3. It’s just crazy… you expect a house up in the hills to be in danger, but a house down on the beach?

4. All of this sucks. They have kids. And personal possessions. It isn’t about the money. What if you because successful and people began cheering for your demise? She might have been born into wealth but a lot of people in the area worked to get where they were.

5. No one is immune to environmental disasters especially as climate change aims to kill us all.

   But the rich have privileges to protect them.

10. One thing that always gets me during these events is all the pets. Like it must be scary trying to round them up when you have so many rooms they could be hiding in.

11. That really sucks. She’s been an amazing advocate for reform in the “troubled teen industry”. She and I both suffered similar abuse in the TTI and she’s used her influence to affect real change recently. I respect the hell out of her for that. I know she’s extremely wealthy and isn’t exactly homeless now but losing a home is a major trauma and I hope she is getting the emotional support she needs.

13. The thing is I’m absolutely surprised it jumped the PCH. The risk to that is firetrucks will have issues getting down the road. Sure they’ll rebuild these homes, but also some of the malibu structures and businesses have been there forever it’s generally sad to see some people lose their family businesses they’ve had for years.

    People also forget that yeah some people just got lucky when they bought and property taxes are favorable so they never moved.

14. It’s easy to say “who cares, they are rich”. But..one thing I learned being successful is that money brings a whole different set of problems and unhappiness.

44. I’m in Australia and they showed Steve Gutenberg being interviewed on the street while he was moving strangers cars out of danger. He asked people in the area to leave their keys in the car so he could move them.
    Haven’t seen his face in years. What a legend.

45. Also realize a lot of these homeowners probably weren’t even home at the time of the fires—out of the country, working or whatever. No chance to save anything.

49. Yes she can buy a new house instantly. Respectfully there are things that are irreplaceable. Photos, mementos or items you have an attachment to. I lost everything in a fire a few years ago and it’s a very emotional and difficult experience

50. Devastating for everyone losing their homes. Truly heartbreaking. It’s hard to feel a lot of sympathy for the 1% but anyone who has experienced the loss of their home knows the grief that comes with this and it’s something money cannot fix. Your memories, your history, homes are so emotional. Then *poof*…. turned to ashes. Never any closure because it’s just there one second and then gone forever.
