The $4,950 STEM grant from the Toshiba America Foundation will support the Veterinary Science courses at the high school.
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Middletown High School is set to benefit from a $4,950 grant from the Toshiba America Foundation, the school district announced on Wednesday.
The funds will enhance the high school’s Veterinary Science courses that are offered as part of a collaboration with the Middlesex Community College Veterinary Technology program.
The Toshiba America Foundation is a nonprofit grant-making organization that is dedicated to helping classroom teachers make STEM learning fun and successful for kindergarten to 12th grade students.
The funding will allow the school district to purchase two animal mannequins that will be used in the high school for training in veterinary emergency room scenarios. Middletown Agriculture Science students in Grades 11 and 12 can enroll in the College Career Pathways in Veterinary Technology.
At the high school, students will be able to earn up to five college credits for their courses. The district says that another goal is for students to earn their Pet CPR and Rescuer certification offered through RECOVER, the Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation initiative, which is considered an industry standard in the veterinary profession.
“This grant enables our students to train with industry-standard equipment, bridging the gap between high school and college-level veterinary education,” said Superintendent Alberto Vázquez Matos, Ph.D., Ed.D. “By providing hands-on emergency medical training with these mannequins, we’re preparing our students for real-world veterinary careers while they earn college credits.”
According to the district, grants from the Toshiba America Foundation fund projects are created by individual classroom teachers. The “direct-to-teacher” approach has found quick success.
The funding enables teachers to change the way they teacher Science, Technology, Engineer and Mathematics subjects because the money supports equipment for hands-on experiments and inquiry-based approaches to the curriculum.
