Ukraine is prepared to assist Moldova in alleviating its
current energy crisis, largely engineered by Russia, Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Jan. 8.
Zelenskyy made the statement after a phone call with Moldovan President Maia Sandu earlier the same day.
“Of course, the main goal is to help Moldova through this difficult period of energy challenges and prevent Moscow from inciting social unrest,” the Ukrainian president said.
“The entire energy situation in Moldova, particularly on the left bank of the Dniester [River], is an attempt by Russia to manipulate energy resources against the Moldovan government. We are ready to assist Moldova, including by supplying coal.”
Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and providing all Moldovan citizens with the conditions to “live peacefully and work towards their country, overcoming poverty and our shared movement towards the European Union.”
Due to the lack of power, all industrial enterprises in the unrecognized Transnistria have halted operations.
Moldovan government spokesperson Daniel Vode stated that Russia has left the residents of Transnistria without heat and is using Gazprom to apply pressure on the country.
Transnistrian separatists have demanded that Moldova pay for the supply of Russian gas to the unrecognized Russian puppet “republic.”
Moldova has found alternative sources for electricity and avoided a blackout. Additionally, Moldova offered to help Transnistrian “authorities” with procuring gas from the EU. However, Transnistria refused Moldova’s assistance, leading to rolling blackouts in the region.
