Mason “Big Mac” Cundiff, 12, of Lawrenceburg, is a baseball player through and through. His love and dedication to the sport recently got him an invitation to Barcelona, Spain, with the USA Baseball 12U National Team in March.
Mason attends Anderson County Middle School and is a member of their baseball team, the “Mustangs”. He has played baseball for Anderson County Little League for the past 6 years, most recently on the Senior Division Anderson Team.
Mason has played on two travel teams in the past year, Bluegrass Baseball Club from Lawrenceburg and Southern Madison Sluggers from Richmond, Ky. His prime position is first base, however, he also plays third base while occasionally catching and pitching. He is known for hitting multiple home runs during his travel ball season and winning several home run derbies.
Mason’s road to Spain began with a nomination for the Future Prospects Top 72 showcase in Panama City Beach during Thanksgiving. Mason’s family took full advantage of this nomination and attended the showcase. He ended up being the only kid from Kentucky in the tournament ages 8-18.
These kids were told in each game a player is selected for the MVP of the game, if selected you have a chance to go to Spain, Mason got the first MVP on the first game in Panama.
“Now he has the opportunity as a small town Kentucky kid to travel to Spain and play on team USA in March. If you know Big Mac then you know everything he does is with Baseball in mind. He was so excited to have won an MVP award last month while playing in a baseball tournament in Panama City Beach. If anyone would like to help out or know any businesses willing to help sponsor this trip send them our way. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” stated Mason’s mom, Cassandra Cundiff.
According to USA baseball, the kind of player it takes to make a National team is a player that has a love for the game, fights through adversity, and leans on others for support. Mason’s friends, family, and coaches truly believe he embodies these qualities and has earned his spot on the 12U National Team.
