I mean… They also thought Brexit was a good idea so their track record of critical thinking isn’t great.
The spin:
>[UK] Nearly 30% think China likely to have spread Covid on purpose, poll finds
And the details:
>In terms of how conspiracy theories had infiltrated the mainstream, the polling found 6% thought it was definitely true that “coronavirus is a bio-weapon intentionally spread by the Chinese state”, with a further 23% thinking it was probably true. **The findings on the reach of these conspiracy theories were similar to those in other countries, though levels of belief were even higher in countries such as the US.**
So is the UK an outlier with regards to these types of questions or not? Sounds very much not but why let that get in the way of a good headline, eh guardian?
A lot of people take these sort of questions as a referendum on whether they like the country or person in general. So if you have a negative opinion of China in general you will be likely to answer yes because “I wouldn’t put it past them”.
I don’t think it was on purpose, but I totally think it came out of that lab by accident.
“Do not ascribe to malice that which can be explained by incompetence”
I believe its pretty likely that Covid emerged from the Wuhan Virology institute. The first cases of Covid were near that area. Also when Covid first emerged and there was talk of quarantine of Wuhan, literally hundreds of thousands of people left Wuhan to other parts of China, and they allowed international travel to continue, seeding the virus all over the world.
This is why you swipe left when people write “everything happens for a reason”.
I don’t think China spread it on purpose, but at the same time I would not be surprised if they did either.
Did i think they did it on purpose? No, but i can see it escaping from a lab on accident. Since China is known for fuck ups like that. And also, they tried whatever they could to supress the news about it, and they spend months scrubbing all evidence of what happened before allowing a independent investigation.
And people here are surprised that Russians could believe Ukraine is ruled by nazis who want to attack Russia. Propaganda works.
