Hi everyone, I have a pasion for birds and for years it's my dream to spot and hear a ptarmigan. In march I am planning to go to Levi in Lapland.
I've read that there is a chance to see them in Nationaal park Pallas-Yllästunturi, but the area is huge so I wanted to ask if anybody has advise on spotting these unique birds around Levi or specific spots in the national park.
I was thinking about joining a bird tour, but I can't specifically find this information.

I would probably try to find a local guide. Also asking nature centers might be helpful.
Here is one at Ylläs: https://classic.nationalparks.fi/yllastunturivisitorcentre
There was one also at Pallas, but they had to demolish the building and new one is not but yet.

I have no first hand knowledge – just random spottings years ago – but [iNaturalist has a few spottings in Pallas-Ylläs.](https://inaturalist.laji.fi/taxa/949-Lagopus-muta) Select the map and zoom in, I don’t know how accurate the spottings are, but you get an idea.
Try tiira.fi which is a bird spotting site. After you register, you can search for “riekko” within area “lapin lintutieteellinen yhdistys ry”
This bird is easiest to see just before winter or just when most of the snow has melted as the white feather color stands out from the background.
Just ski up to the treeline on a fell and you have a good chance of spotting them.
They can be sometimes seen even next to the ski slopes. A friend of mine spotted one from a lift and I’m forever salty about that one.
Awebo!
Anywhere above treeline and wider open marshlands, very early in the morning if you wan’t to hear their mating calls.
