González calls on Venezuelan military to reject Maduro: “I represent the will of millions”

1. The problem is soldiers are probably the only ones to have a decent salary in their families and even if they agree with González, most will not risk losing the only source of income of their household. It’s how authoritarian regimes manage to stay in power despite having the majority of the population against them. Keep the military well fed and you’ll reign (almost) forever

2. Neighbor countries just have to bring weapons to arm the Venezuelan populace so they can find the courage for a coup d’état. They need it more than ever, they probably won’t survive the next 6 years in decline.

3. That won’t happen due to the kleptocratic nature of the regime. The Venezuelan military has significant economic privileges and engages in transnational crime, and if Maduro is removed from power, they would lose all of that and potentially face life imprisonment or death.

4. I’ll say it again, we are watching a new North Korea in the making next door.
