On Friday at 10:34 the State Fire and Rescue Service received a call to Strazde parish, Talsi municipality. At the scene, firefighters used hydraulic tools to free three people from a minibus.
According to Latvian Television, the van was occupied by students and two teachers of a vocal ensemble. The children were pupils up to 10th grade, LTV confirmed at the Ventspils Culture Center. The ensemble traveled to Daugavpils to take part in the final of the 5th International Young Singers Christmas Song Contest, which will take place on January 11.
According to the NMPD, one adult – the conductor – lost her life in the accident.
A total of 8 people were also taken to hospital, 2 of them adults and the rest teenagers. The victims were taken to hospital conscious, in both serious and moderate condition.
10 NMPD teams worked at the scene, including 2 specialist medical teams that are involved in particularly complex events.
One of the children injured in the accident lost their life after the tragic crash, the Children’s Clinical University Hospital (BKUS) confirmed to Latvian Television on Saturday, January 11.
“This child was taken to the Children’s Hospital yesterday in a very serious condition and his life could not be saved,” the hospital said.
