  1. Germany against fuel boycott. “Morally indefensible”.

We believe that this position is morally untenable and will collapse, if not in the next few days, then in the next few weeks. The question is how many Ukrainian civilians will die in rocket fire during this time,” – Andriy Melnyk said Wednesday in an interview with Die Welt.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz objected this week to halting oil and natural gas imports from Russia. Economy Minister Robert Habeck also spoke out against the embargo. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock warned that Germany must reckon with the consequences of a possible energy boycott, the daily “Tagesspiegel” recalls.

However, there is no shortage of voices calling for an embargo. “The Russians are particularly sensitive when it comes to their economy. In this case, we must try to tighten the screw of sanctions as much as possible. An oil and gas embargo would be the sharpest sword to hit Putin’s lifeblood artery. It’s a tough step, but a necessary one if we don’t want to indirectly co-finance his war,” FDP politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann told the daily Bild on Thursday.

“Vladimir Putin has leveled Mariupol and it will not be the last city,” CDU party foreign policy expert Norbert Roettgen stressed in the Tagesspiegel. “Since NATO cannot intervene directly if one does not want to risk a world war, an oil and gas embargo is needed now.”
This is how Russia makes money from oil and gas

“The fact that Germany has so far not given up its oil business with Russia means that the federal government gives the Russian president 65 million dollars a day (…) according to an analysis by the environmental organization Transport&Environment,” writes the daily Tagesspiegel.
Unlike gas, it is easy to find substitutes for Russian oil in other countries. “The oil market is very flexible. It has often proven that it can react quickly to crises and reorganize its supply chains in a short time,” – Steffen Bukold, who has been observing the oil industry for almost 20 years, explains in an interview with the Tagesspiegel.
How much would an oil boycott, including by the EU, affect the Russian economy? “More than previous sanctions” – asserts Bukold. “Russia derives $500 million a day from oil sales in the EU alone.”
“By contrast, Russia earns only about 170 million euros a day from gas. A boycott of oil by EU countries would therefore hit Putin much harder than a boycott of coal and gas,” – writes the RND portal. “The time has come to show that Europe is serious about solidarity with Ukraine. Germany must set a good example, especially since only about a third of the country’s oil comes from Russia.”

Germany has become dependent on Russia

“It is said in government circles that stopping fossil fuel imports would in any case result in further price increases. Heating costs would rise, prices at gas stations would rise, and ultimately there would have to be a reduction in consumption in the industrial chain – which would cause (…) economic disruption,” – writes “Tagesspiegel”.
“By admitting that without supplies from Russia it is impossible to secure Europe’s energy supply for heating, mobility, electricity and industry, the chancellor (…) admits a dependency that allegedly prevents Germany and Europe from reaching for the most effective means against the belligerent Vladimir Putin – the oil and gas embargo. What sounds like force majeure on Scholz’s part, however, is the result of decades of misguided German policy,” – writes the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung in a commentary.

The responsibility for the current dilemma cannot simply be shifted onto the whole of Europe: it was primarily Germany that failed to build LNG terminals, and Germany that handed over its gas storage facilities to Russia”. – we read in SZ.

  2. Many European countries do not wish to ban oil and gas exports as it would hurt our economies too much. We’re all too glad to hide behind Germany and let it take all the blame for us.

Just for the fun of it Germany should suddenly agree to the ban and watch as these countries suddenly have to come out of the shadow and own their shit too.

  3. My regret is that I’m not seeing Merkel and the CDU get roasted over this.

On the other hand, seeing the Greens defend oil and gas imports is a funny consolation prize.

  4. Yall know those scarry pics on cigarettes “smoking causes cancer”? EU needs pics of killed ukrainian kids on every gas purchase.

  5. I am going to be honest its nevee going to happen saying this as german merkel screwed us over in her time in office
We can cut in a year kohl completely but gas and oil? Nope. Melnyk can say what he wants but such a thing would harm us for decades and we are economic backbone of the eu

  6. We just need to hold them in contempt for this. Similar thing happened before. They only allowed sending offensive military weapons or they increased their military budget after huge backlash in society and media. Not because it was righteous to do so.

Just remind the politicians on daily basis how evil they are for this and sooner or later they will do it, like before. Politicians are empty and vain psychopaths. They will only do something if it benefits them directly. So let’s make sure they will be punished politically for this wrong decision.

  7. This greens love their Russian oil and gas.

How about they support some virtuosos coal from Poland. Coal from Poland – the most anti-Putin energy source.

  8. Putin earns much more from gas and oil exports then he needs for running war. We are basically financing killing of innocent Ukrainians….
