  1. Doesn’t this all look a bit like “holding governments to account for their failures”?

Like yes, the choice of targetting labour on inaction on grooming gangs is an odd one given the conservatives complete lack of action or care on the subject, but still.

You should be able to say what you think. Inciting direct violence is illegal and should be, but simply expressing a belief, regardless of how wrong, should in my opinion be legal. I’m old enough to remember that when Nick Griffin went on question time a lot of people were saying “I disagree with what he says, but I would die to defend his right to say it” and similar sentiment. Seems like a pretty far off world now.

  2. Just fine the fuckers. Then fine them again. And keep fining them until they obey our rules or pull out of our market.

Worst case, someone will launch new platforms that do meet the rules.

  3. Young people have died needlessly in Britain due to pushing pushing harmful content at them; and catfish blackmailers. The platforms have done close to nothing. One platform reinstated previously banned racist agitators and the results have been predicatble and sub-optimal. We get it, you tech bros own America now. If you don’t like our country’s laws then fuh cough.

  4. Anybody else getting sick of foreign oligarchs interfering in our nation’s politics?

  5. So now “free speech” means “holding us accountable for allowing incitement to violence on our platforms.”

  6. For anyone unaware, it’s because the Online Safety Act comes into effect 17th March. Any website/social media failing to adhere to the guidelines can be fined up to 10% of global revenue.

  7. Cambridge Analytica and the ensuing years of dogshit not enough for you mate?

  8. But we have no problem with Gates meeting the PM behind closed doors?

  9. I think the US can become a cesspool of “free speech” if they wish. The UK has its own culture of decency that Americans mostly understand. Musk and Zuckerberg have one thing in mind… MONEY. I think it’s time to ditch X and Facebook. I have already. Decency can be found here.

  10. They really don’t understand the concept that social media entries are exactly the same as saying something out loud or writing it down.

As they are the same, the consequences are the same and because they live in the USA and have Trump as a standard holding for not caring about consequence but the Online Safety Act is simply going to be used as a tool to bring such companies into line with the concept of consequences and they are running scared as the U.K. will go after them!!

  11. They would’ve been bullied so bad at my school, pair of cunts.

  12. Time for the UK and Europe to start getting tougher with these ass licking clowns, let’s see if they can afford to lose UK and European customers

  13. There’s something vaguely hilarious about an entire thread on a deeply flawed social media site throwing tantrums about other social media sites. Presumably Reddit is the gold standard that can stand proud when all the others are dismantled amarite?

They are all just silly websites in which people vomit words into a box. It really isn’t worth getting agitated about.

  14. Maybe they should pick on China or Russia if they want a fight.

  15. Strange they aren’t so vocal about free speech in China?

  16. Why are we acting like Elon Musk wants to protect free speech? He shadow bans people for voicing opinions he doesn’t like and revoked blue verification badges of his own supporters for criticising his H1B visa comments. He thinks it means he can say whatever he wants, but nobody can contradict him.

If you can’t see that this is all about greed and power then you are naive as fuck. The vultures only want to feast on our carcass.

  17. We’re seeing two sides of evil billionaire activity and behaviour. On the one hand there’s the overt interference of musk – vocal and visible. On the other is the slimy zuck who sells out all his principles for his business interests. Equally despicable, but at least musk does his openly and puts his name to it.

  18. Free speech is not anti-Britain.

Only when fact-checking is done in a neutral way can it contribute positively to political debate. Currently it’s conflated with EDI/liberal ideas.

Should not be allowed and we need to do a lot more to prevent these: Encouraging people to commit suicide. Organizing illegal acts. Grooming.

Should be allowed, essential to political discourse, and currently/previously not allowed on facebook/twitter: posting statistics about race and migration breakdowns of crime/tax/welfare and using this to argue for stricter migration policy or for remigration. Arguing for biology-based definitions of sex and using this to argue for female-exclusive sports. Liberals try to control this with content policies, creating information shortages in key areas of political discourse.

  19. I’ve deleted my Twitter and I’m deleting my Facebook.

  20. The world would be happier without social media ran by unaccountable people
