I say this as I look back on 2024 and the: cancelled/delayed trains, NHS delays, overpriced yet low quality food, litter everywhere, cultural fracturing, companies fleeing the London Stock Exchange, number of friends and colleagues who have left the country and general negativity and tribalism online and in the streets.
I want to be proud and positive but I fear I have just been knocked down too many times.

I’m the exact opposite I guess. Moved here over 20 years ago from the US and married a Yorkshire lad. Still love it here. I live up North, have a nice house in a nice community, and have a good job at a wonderful progressive and inclusive company. Sure, this time two years ago both my wife and I were made redundant from the same role and company but we’ve bounced back well. We have no debt besides our mortgage and have nearly 20k in savings. We eat out occasionally but mostly cook at home with food from our local butcher and green grocer. Yes, the NHS is struggling so I’m thankful for the private health insurance I get from my job. It got me a necessary back operation in just a few months. To get on the mend I’m a volunteer litter picker in my community. We picked nearly 2500 bags of rubbish in 2024.
Yes, Britain does have problems but I feel hopeful that things will get better with the change in government. Certainly don’t feel all doom and gloom.
It’s been the tagline for the UK for a long time. The clue should have been when instead of ads for charity campaigns in Africa, you started to see ads for charity campaigns that support food banks and help the homeless.
Austerity broke the country. Labour doing their best David Cameron impression isn’t going to fix things.
