Taoiseach: We will have to re-examine our neutrality as ‘the world has changed’

  1. Too cowardly to hop off the fence when it comes to his own countries unification, but happy to throw his hat in when it comes to conflicts at the other side of Europe.

  2. Operation Get Behind The Irish will soon be rolled across Eastern Europe. We’ll see how tough those Russians are when their tank tracks get mashed up with Irish bodies

  3. Stay the fk where we are. This excessive political correctness and herd mentality is ruining everything.

  4. I struggle to see how “the world has changed”.

We were neutral throughout the second world war and the cold war. This conflict is no different really.

  5. It seems in this age of technology and communication, people who want to volunteer to fight in conflicts can, see that word I used volunteer, it means a person does something of their own will, not because a government decided it for them. Many in the west went to fight Isis.

Sadly I know some people are colluded in to war, via propaganda like many who fight in the Russian army. I hope they see this in time and lay down their arms (Some already have). Or you know deal with Putin, only takes one person to change that situation.

Ukraine are defending themselves, who is Ireland defending themselves from ?

Is England going to invade again ? Because I can’t see any other nation taking on Ireland in the near future.

If a war was to say start with China then fuck me we are in ww3 and the rules may change.

Though you think the Russian army are piss poor.

China’s is worse. All they have is numbers, keeping supply going for said numbers would cripple their land, though I don’t think China care to much about it’s people.

So no, if people wish to go fight they can by volunteering.

  6. Wouldn’t it be nice if he focused on fixing any of the dozen internal issues going on before adding another to the pile.

  7. In order to ensure our security and continuing stability, the Republic of Ireland will be reorganised into the first Irish Empire, for a safe and secure society.

  8. Isn’t it beneficial for the international community to have a few neutral countries like ourselves? We are not seen to be on either side in our peacekeeping duties.

  9. Why are people so fecking horny for war????

We will make zero difference in war. The only things that would change in the result of us no longer being neutral in a major global conflict are…

    A. We’d be a glorified military base for yanks.

    B. We would get bombed more.

I’d much much much rather do something that is actually semi-realsitic and productive like take in the refugees and help them with their lives.

  10. The greatest threat to Ireland is from the UK not Russia.

If WW3 did break out we’d be sandwiched between two of the main NATO powers

If the UK gets nuked we’d end up paying the price indirectly.

We’d essentially suffer the same destruction. Ireland as a nation state would cease to exist and probably the rest of the world with it.

So what we’re really talking about is posturing. Do we as a nation want to jump onto the NATO bandwagon and give NATO access to Irish sovereign territory to build bases, dock warships and land planes (we all know about shannon)

How do we benefit from such an agreement ? In short we don’t because at the outset of war we’d be annihilated anyway whether we are in NATO or not

We’d be better off coming up with a contingency plan for a nuclear war and invest in that.

Focus on purely defensive measures and survivability

I’d be doing studies on how to mitigate damage if damage mitigation was possible at all, which I’d doubt is even possible.

  11. This is extremely dangerous. The only thing that’s changed is the people in power. They’ve all become one.

  12. Thanks Taoiseach, you do you but I won’t be fighting for any country so you’ll have to arm yourself up.

  13. Has anyone actually read the article or just the title? There’s no harm in re-examining the country’s neutrality. No harm at all. I doubt anything will change but it’s a discussion worth having

  14. Lads here seem to forget that even the perception of neutrality gives us a huge advantage diplomatically, and seem to think we can just hop in and out of neutrality as we please.

Remember the huge wave of bombings that took place in Europe a few years ago?

Ireland was never touched. Remember when the Taliban retook Afghanistan?

They said they viewed us as fighting the same fight against Imperialism, due to our history. (Obviously being favoured by the Taliban is bad, but not being targeted by the Taliban or Middle Eastern extremists is good).

There are even streets named after Irishmen, like Bobby Sands, in the Middle East.

Ireland is hugely popular in Palestine and various parts of the Middle East, both because of our anti-imperialist history and our neutrality.

Neutrality has helped our international image, protected us against international threats and conflicts and has allowed us to punch above our weight diplomatically.

Abandoning neutrality undermines all that, and removes a lot of the protection and influence we have. So I’d be careful about giving it up. It’s not just about Ukraine, it’s about ALL future conflicts. If it’s viewed that Ireland’s neutrality wavers or changes depending on geo-political circumstances, it could easily undermine our future diplomacy.

If we really want to abandon neutrality, I think there actually needs to be a long informed debate on it. Not just a quick government decision.

Abandoning neutrality to respond to a short term crisis can have long term negative implications, which most people here are ignoring because emotions are high right now.

But once you let that genie out of the bottle, there’s no going back. Neutrality isn’t a switch you can flick on and off. So we need to be really sure it’s what we want, and that we’re aware of all the costs/benefits associated with such a decision, and that the people decide directly, and not just the government.

    That’s my opinion at least.

  15. The world having changed is a flimsy excuse, in reality they’re falling in line and giving up something that will not be so easily reclaimed.

  16. How has this grown legs.

It’s one thing to want to be neutral with a capable defence. It’s another thing to want to bin neutrality altogether. People may be divided on the former but who is asking for the latter????

  17. I really don’t want Ireland to be involved in any war whatsoever. War should have no place in the modern world whatsoever and I’m finding it kind of annoying how everyone is just glamorising it (especially in the Ukraine) instead of treating it like the fucked up situation that it is?

What is war good for? Absolutely nothing.

  18. Never pick a side if dont have the capability to defend your self let alone attack. This would literally be going out of our way to make enemies we dont have

  19. He’s full of shite, he’s just seeing how the population feel about Russia atm and he’s trying to ride the wave. He will do sweet fuck all.

  20. I don’t think we should consider joining NATO, but we should do something in terms of improving the Defense Forces. Members of the Defense Forces should be paid at least a wage they can live on. Perhaps military spending should increase slightly too, such as a handful of fighter jets so we don’t have to rely on Britain when it comes to protecting Ireland’s airspace. A handful of main battle tanks would also go a long way in strengthening the ground forces. Other than that, no need for any major measures.

  21. Lads, this is not good. Doesn’t matter which side you’re on, our neutrality keeps us away from war.

They’re looking to scrap it not because of Ukraine but because they want an EU army and this is the perfect chance to push it through.

Unless you lot want to fight in tranches for wars started by the US, France, Germany and the UK, don’t feel happy about this.

  22. Years of diplomacy getting blown out of the water by a gobshite not long left for political life.

  23. I think we shouldn’t necessarily chance our stance on neutrality if it seems to be benefiting us, but 100%, PLEASE, we need to beef up our defence forces. We couldn’t defend ourselves from a troop of baboons nevermind soldiers.

  24. Literally nobody wants this except the fucking asshats in the Dáil who’d never be called to service

  25. If Ireland was truly neutral, we would not be participating at all. Hell, even Switzerland is not “neutral” anymore in this.
