  1. Demographics are a bitch and no government are going to be able to change those in a meaningful way.

    This means that we basically have 4 options to save our pensions :

    1. Lower pensions : Pension amounts are, on average, relatively low in Belgium (except for public servants). So doing like they just did in Italy (lowering pensions by 2%) is not really an option in the short term.

    2. Raise revenues : Even the most aggressive capital taxes proposed by PvdA/PTB don’t generate enough income to cover the additional costs of the aging of the population in the future. And the rest of the taxes are already super high in Belgium.

    3. Take on more debt : Our debt is already way too high and with higher interest rates . On top of that, who really wants to borrow from future generations when we already put them in such a shitty situation for the climate.

    4. Make people work longer : Our pension age is already high. But there are a lot of exceptions built in.

    It’s really a problem without easy answers.
