Some context: I never considered myself an alcoholic, but I became worried about my drinking habits at the end of 2023 after doing the math to figure out how much I was actually drinking.
It started with having a couple of beers here and there in the evenings, but over the course of a few years that very gradually (so gradually that I didn’t even notice) turned into a habit of drinking three beers every night.
The beers I drank gradually increased in size and ABV, and by the end of 2023 I was regularly drinking three 16oz cans of 7-7.5% ABV beers every evening. So my “3 beers” each evening was actually 5.5-6 standard drinks, or around 40 standard drinks per week. When I realized this, I was horrified.
Last January I decided that I wanted to give up alcohol completely because apparently I can’t trust myself to stick to healthy limits. I didn’t want to go cold turkey, since I’d tried that in the past with only limited success. The results are what you see in the chart in my post.
My last drink was on December 29th, 2024. It was delicious.
Data tracked and chart generated using a LibreOffice Calc spreadsheet.
(P.S. I originally posted this yesterday, but it was closed because of Rule #9.)
Cool, sounds like a healthy path to stopping. Feels so good, my path led me to great tequila and vodkas along with IPA’s. Man, you don’t realize how intense alcohol is in your body and that it literally is a poison disinfectant when drank pure like a martini. Good luck.
Congrats! Keep on, you are doing great
Good for you, man.
Drinking is extremely overrated.
Nothing like really being in the driver’s seat of your own mind.
Kudos for ending it Dec 29th I gotta think the New Years party was tempting.
Well done. Don’t look back. Consider investing what you used to spend per month on alcohol into an index fund.
Congrats on your decision. I know it isn’t an easy thing to come to terms with. I’m happy for you.
Congratulations. Keep it up!
It’s impressive that you realized it and did something against it and also something good for your health and future. But do you think there will be a time in your future where you can have some beers few times a year without getting into a problematic territory again?
Now do your weight for late 2023 through 2024.
I dunno if the beers put on a lot, but there has to be some change, and a cool graphic to go with it.
It’s refreshing to see posts like yours instead of those who brag about how much they drink… Congratulations on your progress and keep it up!
Fuck yeah, OP! Way to go!
I know that’s not an easy task and you’ve got the respect of this stranger from the internet!
I’m curious how much weight you lost doing this.
Great taper down. I have friends with family that tried cold turkey after years of drinking that led to serious health problems from stopping too quickly. In one case it resulted in death.
I’m on a dry january and started testing the various non-alcoholic beers…they have improved a lot. Might not return to regular beer.
My first test with non-alcoholic wine didn’t taste as good. Maybe just a bad brand. Will try a few more.
After a year of not drinking, I can say that I don’t miss it. I missed it at first but then I was kinda disgusted by the idea of having a self-induced headache.
What positive changes have you experienced over the last 2 weeks?
Have you taken up any habit to replace it? (Like drinking tea in the evening or water?)
When browsing through my feed I read the graph title as “All the dicks I had in 2024” and I was a bit concerned.
Anyway, congrats OP!
I never thought about a gradual by day method. Great job!
Well done getting control of your life! How do you feel?
I’m curious: what was the makeup of your alcohol consumption? It sounds like it was all beer?
This data is beautiful. I hope you achieve complete and utter freedom.
Note: Even if you still drink a few when you want to. As long as it serves you and not the other way around.
Great job! Few people manage to take this path of moderation
This post made me want a beer
Amazing work, both the self care and the data! Keep it up
I’m just an internet stranger, but i want to say that I’m really proud of you.
Recognizing the level of self control you have is a huge accomplishment in itself. Actually doing something about it is even bigger.
Two of my relatives were heavy drinkers. Not to the point of drunkenness, or at least not what people think of as drunkenness. A drink at night to calm down turned into several drinks each night, unable to sleep without it.
For both of them, it very likely shortened their lives, and their last years were not good.
Hands up who’s on Dry January like me?
You got this bud! Stay strong, remind yourself that alcohol is a poison and youre better off without it!
Impressive willpower, and clean visualization. You deserve a high five 🙌

Progress, not perfection. Good job man.
