COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – A new building at Mays School of Business encourages students and staff to collaborate and interact in the classroom.
Mays Business School’s brand new Wayne Roberts ‘85 Building opened its doors to students and faculty ahead of the spring semester on Jan 9. The expansion to the Mays Business Education Complex is now creating spaces for collaborative learning.
“Teaching has really changed. The way that teaching was done before was often more of a ‘sage on the stage,’ you know, up in front of students,” said Dean Shannon Deer, associate undergraduate dean at Mays School of Business. “Now the way that people learn and the way that the internet and social media has changed learning; it really is this collaborative process with practical hands-on experience that can happen in these classrooms.”
The new 81,393 square-foot building features a grand atrium, a cafe, learning studios, and a collaboration plaza. Classrooms and student spaces were designed to encourage collaborative and interactive business education at the school.
“Now we really want those collaborative learning spaces where faculty can move around and be part of a team, really helping students learn,” Deer explained. “We also have a lot of collaboration spaces outside of the classroom where students can gather as groups and work on projects and engage with each other.”

The new building hopes to meet the need for more collaborative learning with group learning spaces, interactive technology, and classrooms designed for hands-on learning.
Sophomore Alex Segura, accounting major at Mays School of Business, told KBTX he learns best in group environments. He expects having a space on campus dedicated to his preferred learning style will help him succeed in class.
“I love studying on campus. Me, personally, when I’m at home and everything like that, I don’t study too well. But being here with my friends and everything, having all this space to ourselves as business students is just a really great opportunity,” added Segura.
The Wayne Roberts building is on Olsen Eoad near the E. L. Wehner building.
