She has a “severe neurological condition and is wheelchair bound”, but the state is only giving her €70 a week and providing accommodation, and the €70 is because the hotel food costs €10 per day. That seems very harsh. No allowance whatsoever for additional costs like clothing?
Although “her husband has high blood pressure, diabetes, and weight issues” seems like a really weak excuse for needed social welfare. I get that he may be caring for the wife but the article seems to suggests he also wants payments because of his health. High blood pressure being cited as a reason for disability payments? Really?

They are here under temporary protection and that is what they are getting. About time this grift is ended. We are still getting 100’s arriving here each month years after the war began.
A combined €412 per week for the two of them is fuck all. The comments on this sub of “send them home” is depressing. She is in a wheelchair and he is caring for her, it’s really not that much. Especially when you consider that top Irish earners (millionaires, multi millionaires and billionaires pay quite a low tax accordingly). They fled from fucking Ukraine. We have Irish people here who have not been at war and milk off the system.

One of the more worrying things about this story is that they took the state to the High Court, no doubt at the taxpayers expense. I suspect if an Irish person or couple was in a similar position they would struggle to afford the solicitor and barrister necessary even to begin such an action. When unsuccessful they would be stuck with all of their legal costs and presumably the court costs. They would be financially ruined.
This isn’t the case for those under temporary protection, et cetera.
Win or lose, the taxpayer still loses. The legal profession still wins, well ….it always does in fairness!
Why were their payments removed? I want them to get them if they’re not working. I’d rather Ukrainian refugees – fleeing a war on the doorstep of Europe, a war that protects us all – get the money than some able bodied Irish wastrel

For those who didn’t bother reading the article the woman is disabled to a wheelchair with brain issues and the husband is her carer.
Hardly going to be able to move quickly in a war zone so them leaving and coming here makes total sense.
